Corrective Hair Surgery in Edmonton

Expert Corrective Hair Surgery at Advanced Hair & Skin Surgery

There are several situations where patients may need corrective hair transplant surgery, including:

  • Past transplants now look unnatural either because of older large graft techniques done at that time or because of progressive hair loss, which has led to an unnatural look.
  • Scarring from medical conditions or injury has caused a loss of hair in the scalp, eyebrow, eyelashes, mustache, or beard.
  • Alopecia areata patches that have failed to regrow.
  • Over-plucking of eyebrows, leading to long-term thinning or loss of the hair.

Good hair surgeons know a variety of techniques for correcting these situations. Excision and follicle recycling, softening of old grafts with follicular unit grafts, scar revision, and scar grafting are commonly used by Dr. Elliott to repair and reconstruct these situations. The bottom line is that, in his experience, anything can be fixed when it comes to hair repair at Advanced Hair & Skin Surgery in Edmonton and Sherwood Park, AB. Call us to schedule an appointment today!

What Is Hair Transplant Surgery?

Hair transplant surgery moves existing hair to areas with thinning or no hair. Doctors have been doing corrective hair transplant surgeries for decades, but the techniques have evolved significantly. Most patients have the procedure done in their doctor’s office. Your surgeon will clean your scalp and inject medicine to numb your head. Two different methods can be used for the transplant:

  • FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) – FUT can be accomplished via the strip technique, which uses microscopes to dissect very large numbers of small grafts, each graft containing no more than one to three hairs (follicular units). These hairs are removed from the back and sides of the scalp in a strip where they genetically have a longer life than those that were lost in the thinning or bald areas of the head.
  • FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) – If you’re getting the FUE procedure, the surgeon will shave the back of your scalp. Then, they will remove hair follicles one by one from that area. The area heals with small dots, which your existing hair will cover.

From there, both procedures are the same. After the surgeon prepares your grafts, they will clean and numb the part of your scalp the hair will go. The surgeon will create holes or slits and carefully place each graft in the holes. After preparing the grafts, the surgeon cleans and numbs the area where the hair will go, creates holes or slits with a scalpel or needle, and delicately places each graft in one of the holes. Depending on the size of the hair transplant you’re getting, the process usually takes around four to eight hours. If you continue to lose hair or decide you want fuller, thicker hair, you might decide to get another treatment in the future.

What Areas Can Be Transplanted?

The most common transplanted area for hair loss is the scalp. Several other areas of the body can be transplanted, including the beard, eyebrows, and eyelashes. The beard area is becoming a popular area for men in our Sherwood Park clinic.

Recovery Expectations & Risks

You can expect a few things in the days and weeks following your corrective hair surgery. Because your scalp is expected to be tender, you may need to take pain medication for a few days. After the surgery, your surgeon will have you wear bandages over your scalp for at least one or two days. They may also prescribe an anti-inflammatory drug or antibiotic for you to take. Most patients find they can return to work two to five days following the procedure.

Within two to three weeks, your transplanted hair will fall out, and you should start to notice new growth within a few months. Most people will see 60 percent of new hair growth within six to nine months. Some surgeons prescribe their patients the hair-growing drug minoxidil (Rogaine) to increase hair growth following the procedure.
